Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

I love submarine films. The Hunt For Red October, U571, you name it. I also love SF with submarines such as Fantastic Voyage. I suspect this love of subs comes from watching the TV show Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea as a kid. It might also explain why I always go out of my way to watch anything Irwin Allen ever did. Cheesy but always meant to thrill and excite. I remember so little about the show and have only re-watched one episode because it had a werewolf in it. At some point I'm going to have to track down the original movie (1961 starring Walter Pidgeon, Peter Lorre, Joan Fontaine and Barbara Eden) then watch the TV show (1964-1968, starring Richard Basehart, David Hedison). In its day it was popular enough to spawn many merchandizing products such as comics and board games. I have the novelization because it was written by Theodore Sturgeon. I should read that too. I did watch Seaquest DSV with Roy Scheider back in the '90s (1993-1996, also starring Jonathan Brandis, Ted Raimi, Royce D. Agglegate) . I guess that series never really moved beyond the concepts of VTTBOTS. The underlying inspiration for all these shows is no doubt Jules Verne and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (another sub fav). Michael Crichton tried to use that book as inspiration for his novel Sphere but only with so-so results. What I'd really like to see is a steam-punk series (perhaps featuring Nemo) that follows his adventures under the sea. I guess I'll just have to write that myself. Nemo meets VTTBOTS. Now that would be cool.

That was a fun series. I think WW II submarine films, such as Run Silent Run Deep might also have had some influence of the show.

You haven't haven't read your copy of the novelization either? Funny, I've had it for years and still haven't read it.

Can't help you with the film but 32 of TV episodes are on Hulu
